What is a AC3 file?
A file with an AC3 extension uses lossy compression to reduce the overall size of a file. AC3 stands for Audio Codec 3 created by Dolby Laboratories. This type of file supports the surrounding sound. It has a separate track for each of six speakers of a surround sound setup. One speaker is dedicated to low-frequency subwoofer output, while others are dedicated to the normal range. Advanced Audio Coding or AAC file format is an Apple iTunes and iTunes Store default encoding method for music files. It is similar to MP3 format, except it has a better sound quality. This type of file sometimes uses the AAC file extension, but it is wrapped mostly in the M4A file container. It means that they often carry the M4A file extension instead of ACC. Mac users can open AAC files with iTunes, and all Windows fans use VLC, Media Player Classic (MPC-HC), Windows Media Player, MPlayer, Audials One, etc. In case you have a player that doesn't support this type of file, you can always convert it to another format.
